Waka Ama

WALT: plan a recount so that it is structured, by using paragraphs.

An Unforgettable Experience at Sea.

I gripped the edge of the waka and heaved all of my weight against the side, pushing it into the sea. Before I knew it, I was in the waka with Constable Rob who was yelling, “Kia rite!”

My friends and I held our hoe firmly waiting for his next command, “Hoe!” he yelled. We all reached forward, we dug out some water with our hoe. Within minutes we had taken off, out to the open sea. At the same time as we were paddling, we were making sure we were paddling in time with our leader, Whaea Ronni.

Then came the difficult part, trying to turn the waka around the buoy. We all struggled to pull the submerged hoe towards us and pull it underneath the waka. The pressure of the water, against the hoe was making us turn in the opposite direction. Thankfully Matua Rob got us back on track and we slowly turn the waka around.

Now it was time to head back to the shore. We were determined to finish wit a strong ending. “Kia rite!” yelled Matua Rob and away we went. We were huffing and puffing as we were trying our best to get back to shore. We could see the shore line and we paddled as fast as we could. WHOOSH, a huge wave caught us and pushed our waka onto the shore. Waka ama was cool.
